Romanian Association of Solid Waste Management
The Romanian Association of Solid Waste Management (RASWM) is the only Romanian association that focuses on activities connected to waste management, recycling and reuse, according to environmental issues. Its foundation in 1999 was an answer to the need for an organization that would deal with both the waste management operators' problems and the growing interest of the population regarding this important field of activity.
The Association started its activity as a professional institution focusing on: a general improvement of the quality of waste management operators' activities; the promotion, on a national level, of new strategies, policies and norms in the waste management services and environmental protection; the creation of a new, ecological attitude of the population towards the environment.
Due to an increase in the number of its members, and also as a result of the variety of their problems (generally connected with the fact that over 78% of them are private companies) RASWM was transformed into an employers’ professional body. Nowadays, it is the only professional association and employers’ professional body recognized on national level (due to the large number of members and citizens it serves), and also on international level - the RASWM is a National Member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and member of the European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD).
The objectives of the RASWM, as they appear in the Statute, are as follows:
- represents, preserves, promotes and supports the economic, technical and legal interests of its members;
- encourages private initiative as the main promoter of higher standards in the waste management services, endeavoring to attract Romanian and foreign investors as business partners;
- supports technological and scientific progress by initiating and supervising professional training and specialization, and also by promoting the exchange of scientific information;
- cooperates with Romanian and foreign organizations connected to the waste management activities, organizing the participation of its members to international important activities;
- promotes the strategies, policies and regulations adopted in the waste management and environmental domains on a national, European, and world level;
- publishes the only Romanian technical-scientific magazine, - Salubritatea - the first national publication dealing with this particular theme.
The main activities of the Romanian Association of Solid Waste Management are:
- providing professional training and specialized consulting services;
- cooperation in the field of waste management, recycling, and environment protection;
- collaboration with similar authorities and organizations in Romania and abroad;
- setting-up symposiums, conferences, seminars and exhibitions;
- publishing information materials resulting from studies and research.
